The purpose of organizing this professional development was to allow members of the MSU Teacher Education Preparation program the opportunity to gain empathy for and a better understanding of refugee students and the successes / challenges they face in their transition into the United States Public Education school system.

  Goal 1
Share my personal experience of getting to know “Teresa Kippler” (name of case study student has been changed to protect identity) and excerpts from my case study.
Expanded Focus: “The Refugee Experience”
Discovering what life is like for refugee students.

Goal 2
Have knowledgeable ESL professionals explain how future teachers can better approach and teach a refugee student in their own future classrooms. 
Expanded Focus: “Teaching Refugee Students”
Learning how to be better educators towards refugee students.

Goal 3
Inform listeners of how they can get involved in working with refugee students in East Lansing through organizations like the Refugee Development Center. 
Expanded Focus: “Taking Social Action”
Informing listeners about the RDC and volunteering opportunities.
